Rudolph
Fisher

(1897-1934)
The Conjure Man Dies: A Mystery Tale of Dark Harlem, 1932
During his spare time, Rudolph Fisher dabbled in philosophy, civics, music arranging, drama, writing and volunteering. As for his normal job, Fisher worked as a Roentgenologist (the diagnostic and therapeutic uses of X-rays).
In 1932, he published The Conjure Man Dies. This novel was considered to be the first mystery written by a black American writer. He was in the process of developing his novel into a play at the time of his death at the age of 37. The revisions were completed by his friends, Contee Cullen and Anne Bontemps.
